Hi MAC Activists,

We have hungry kids in our classrooms, and in New York state, in 2024, this is unacceptable. Data show that one-in-seven students in New York state experience regular hunger.

A child cannot learn when they are hungry, and they don’t leave their hunger at the door when they come to school.

The Legislature recognized that supporting our students starts with supporting their basic needs. Both houses included money in their budget proposals to finally give a no-cost school breakfast and lunch to every single student, in every ZIP code. We need that funding to make it into the final budget this year.

😃 What could be: Universal school meals provided during the pandemic gave a glimpse of what this could look like: Fewer hungry children, cafeterias without stigma, happier and healthier students and higher levels of learning.

🍽️ We are almost there: Last year, state and federal changes meant hundreds of thousands more children were eligible for free meals in New York, but an estimated 750 schools and 360,000 students were still left out. This year, we must close the gap.

🎒 New York can do this: This goal is achievable, and its effects will be immediate. When children don’t have to worry if they’ll get another meal and when they don’t have to fear the shame, stigma and potential bullying that surrounds accessing those free meals, we see positive changes in academic performance, attendance and classroom climate.

TAKE ACTION: Urge the Legislature to include funding for universal school meals in this year’s state budget.

We want every child in New York to reach their full potential both in and out of the classroom, and that means every single child in New York must have access to nutritious meals.
